Pampers vs. Target Up & Up Diapers

>> Wednesday, December 15, 2010

For the past 18 months, I've bought nothing but Pampers diapers for my sweet baby J. We started with the Swaddlers, oh how I miss those tiny, soft, little ones. When I was pregnant we were given a package of Huggies and Pampers. But, there was just something about the smell and feel of Pampers that locked me in from day one at the hospital.   I actually never opened the Huggies and donated them to a shelter.  Is that brand loyalty or what?!?

When Jackson started to get bigger and sleep longer, we bought Pampers Baby Dry diapers for nighttime. Eventually, as Jackson outgrew the precious Swaddlers, we converted over to Baby Dry for day and night.

I tried a Pampers Cruisers once, and only once. I wasn't a fan of the way it felt, and they didn't fit Jackson well. He actually peed out the one and only Cruiser he ever wore.

I have terribly sensitive skin. Like to the point that I can't change my soap, detergent or hair products - ever. Even different types of water can make my skin quickly break out into a high school "pizza face". My parents said that the only diaper I could wear was Huggies, and if they switched my behind would be raw from diaper rash almost immediately.

Jackson's skin isn't as sensitive as mine, but it is still very sensitive. We have to use the Lansinoh wipes and Aveeno baby products. Pampers sensitive skin baby wipes and Johnson's baby wash ate his skin raw. So you see, if something works for us, like Pampers, I have a hard time switching!

But, after 18 months of shelling out $35 every two weeks for diapers {Target is the cheapest place for us to buy diapers.  Wal-mart is $2 more and never has Baby Dry in our size stocked in stores} I decided to give the Target Up & Up brand a try. The savings was $0.08 per diaper, $19.99 a pack of 108 vs. $35.99 for a pack of 136.

The Up & Up diapers are not as soft as the Pampers Baby Dry, but they're still soft. I actually think they fit his chubby behind and thighs a little better than Pampers. He's worn them for the past couple of days without getting diaper rash.

Last night was Jackson's first time wearing them to bed and he woke up at 5AM - screaming and soaking wet.  Maybe it was just a coincidence, but it seems that the Baby Drys are able to keep him dry a little better... I'm going to finish up the pack and see if it happens again. If so, the cost savings isn't really saving me enough. I gladly pay the extra 8 cents to not strip a bed at 5AM again!

What have your experiences with diapers been? Are you brand loyal or do you buy whatever is on sale?

I was the same! Pampers then switched over to Up&Up.
I have been using Up&Up since T was probably 6 months old.. LOVE THEM.
Never had a problem and they are much cheaper!

I have been using size 3 Luvs on my little guy (18 months) for awhile and never had a problem. I haven't tried the Target brand yet.I did have a pack of size 4 Pampers left from my shower that I had to use for an emergency the other night(I had no diapers). I have started using them every night. I use the cheap luvs during the day and the one size bigger Pampers at night. They absorb better and so far I have found he wakes up alot less and Momma gets more sleep.

We have seriously sensitive skin. I actually mainly cloth diaper because of it but when we travel or I am behind on laundry Up and Ups are our new favorites. I had a few friends tell me they were as good as pampers and honestly I have been very pleased with them. The wipes (sensitive skin) are great too. They are super thick its almost like using a wash cloth and I am sold on them. The savings are a nice plus too.

we cloth diaper at home, but they won't allow them at daycare... so we've used the target brand since he started school and we love them. keep giving them a chance for sure; we love their prices too!

I used to be really loyal to Pampers until he was about 6 months old. Now we are all about Luvs. I have tried Target but he soaks through. We do use Huggies Overnights though.

All Pampers give Kate a rash. And she had a major blow out the one time we tried the Up & Up - probably coincidence but I'm not chancing it.

She pees through regular Huggies too.

So, the only diapers we use are the Huggie Pure & Natural - they are the only ones that really fit her and they keep her dry from 8pm - 5am! I'll shell out the extra money to avoid leaks!

i am as loyal as you to pampers! i never used anything different on either of my kids, until my son turned one...we, too, started using the target diapers! i LOVE them! once he got a little older he was leaking out every night, so now i use target during the day and i use the pamper overnight diapers in the next size up at night.... i have yet to have a problem! they are the only two brands of diapers i will put on my kids!

We always have to use the Pamper's Extra Protection for nighttime... it's the only one that won't leak because Noah pees soooo much at night. During the day, we've always used Pampers (Cruisers) but I recently switched to the WalMart brand. After several leaky diapers, we're now back to Cruisers. I think you get what you pay for! :)

We love the up&ups, and man...you can't beat that price!

My little guy is just a little younger than Jackson and we just switched the the special overnight diapers from Pampers and they are pretty great. They hold ALOT!

I have friends who swear by the Target diapers and they held the stuff in well but that was the time when brady's bootie rash started and it hasn't gone away. I think it's just a coincidence though.

Anyway, i'm a pampers momma too and started trying the Fisher price brand and love them. Not as soft as pampers but wow they hold some major pee. The overnight ones are awesome.

Amazon has a wonderful deal on diapers. If you get a parents or parenting magazine (which I also find these in dr offices, dentists, etc.)there is a coupon code for 20% off plus signing up for subscribe and save (which you can cancel after you order)and amazon mom can save you 30% more. I usually spend $21 on for 156 size 5 pampers baby dry diapers. And it is shipped for free to your house in 2 days. There is a coupon in the current dec/jan parents magazine that expires end of jan. Hopes this helps if you want to stick with pampers. This deal works with any brand diapers that amazon sells i think!

We use Up & Up's too starting when W was about 4 months old. Before that we too used Pamper's, and I LOVED them. I also love Up & Up's, and I love the price. W hasn't leaked out of them yet, and he wears the same size both day and night! :)

We LOVE Huggies the MOST, but they are really expensive so we just use them at night. We use Pampers during the day, which work great. We used Up & Up for a while, but our Target is always out of size 4 (weird!). I usually find coupons for Pampers making them just as cheap as the Up & Up. I LOVE Huggies wipes, but usually buy the cheapies...of course, Ramsey doesn't have sensitive skin (like me!). :)

Hey just a quick tip- If you join Amazon Mom. You get 30% off, whatever brand you want..and size.
you have to sign up for the subscribe and save program to do it. but I think its worth it.
We use luvs, seem to be the only ones that dont leak besides pampers. but Luvs is cheaper so we stuck with it. Anyway- my point, a 150 pack is 27 bucks versus 35.99

I am totally loyal to Huggies Natural (the green & white wrapper). They're expensive, but they are very soft & keep Berkley VERY dry- all through the night. Same as you- we got some for a shower & I never looked back. It's funny you should mention the smell of Pampers because that's the only thing I don't like about them! My MIL buys them sometimes and I can't get over the smell! Funny!

Kristen, It's Kari Walker. Have you ever considered cloth? One of my neighbors daughter has super sensitive skin and nothing disposable would work. She went cloth because of this and the cost is way lower than the $35 you are spending on disposables. I actually am going to cloth my baby....the modern systems are super easy to use and Michael is even on board. Cost us about $450 total in diapers that will last her as long as she is is wearing diapers. My mom clothed me and my sis, so it's kinda what I know. People think I am crazy, but if you felt how soft they are your might feel different. OK, so what won me over was when I purchased cloth feminine pads (I know, TMI, but they were more for liners for breakthrough issues). I have super sensitive skin myself and working long shifts in the hospital would make me feel awful from chafing and dampness. I dreaded the feeling. So, I tried the Fuzzi Bunz Mama pads and was amazed! Then I got to thinking, if i feel so crapy with some disposable garbage between my legs, how must a baby feel that wears it all the time.....Just a thought. If you want more info let me know!

Although I will say the Huggies Overnights in the Purple package are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't tried Up & Up on Sam, but I did try Luvs once. We've been a Pampers family from day one, too.

If you have a Sam's Club membership, you can get the Baby Dry diapers at a better price than our Target. But I have joined Amazon Moms, so I'm going to compare their price to Sam's Club for my next purchase.

I'll let you know how they compare.

Kristen, I LOVE the Babies R Us supreme diapers. We're almost in a size 3 now, so they had a deal at BRU and I stocked up. They have sales on their diapers a lot. I bought 2 boxes of 116 diapers for $35!! (usually $24.99 a box). Didn't like the Target brand or Walmart brand. Usually during the day we do cloth diapers, but since they've had diarhea problems lately, we've stuck to disposables. Pampers is my fave, but I can't afford to keep shelling out the $$ for TWO babies in diapers! BRU is definately my second best, and the today show had an expose' where families across America did a blind test on diapers and hands down all preferred BRU!

Maybe, if you're afraid of leaks you can do the Pampers at night time and whatever else you choose that is less expensive during the day. You'd still be saving money in the long run, 1 pamper/day instead of 6-7 or however many times you change him. :)

p.s. if you look on diapers.com they have pretty good deals too, free delivery on purchases over $50 (we've bought diapers and wipes there before, hit $50 no problem) and they have pretty reasonable prices. The first time you order, you can use a $10 off coupon that are in a ton of Parent-type magazines. I'll send you one the next time I come across one if you're interested.
